Product Labels, including Barcode Labels and Shelf Labels, can be created and printed from right within NikoHealth. Together, they make it easier for your team to identify, organize, and track items throughout your warehouse or retail environment.
Understanding Barcode Labels
Barcode Labels act as unique identifiers for individual inventory items. These labels help ensure that the right equipment is tracked, delivered, and associated with the correct patient. Each Barcode Label can include important details such as:
BIN Location: where the item is stored
Unit of Measure: such as each, box, or case
Product Serial # or Lot #: supports traceability for serialized or lot-tracked items.

These fields support audit requirements and improve traceability across the entire inventory lifecycle.
Barcode labels are especially valuable during delivery and warehouse operations. When a technician scans a barcode during delivery, NikoHealth automatically links the item to the patient and the delivery event. This creates a clear chain of custody—something that’s essential for compliance and for managing serialized or lot-tracked items. The same applies in the warehouse: scanning items during check-in, check-out, or when transferring inventory between locations helps maintain accurate records and reduces manual errors.
Understanding Shelf Labels
Shelf Labels are designed for the inventory environment. Instead of being tied to a single physical item, they are used to mark shelves, bins, or storage locations. Each Shelf Label can display:
Product Barcode: to quickly access the linked product record
Product Description: to easily identify the item stored in that location
Unit Price: displayed for customer-facing or retail environments
Setting Up Product Labels
To set up your product labels, go to:
Management > Application Settings Product Labels
From here, you can manage both Barcode and Shelf Labels. You can setup preferences for how the labels will print, including the label size and format, and the data fields that will be included when it generates and prints. A label preview is shown and will adjust as you make decisions and customize.
To make labeling flexible, you can choose from different formats to suit your printing workflow. This includes ZPL files for Zebra printing, as well as PDF files for printing on standard printers.
You can set the default number of labels to print when the item count isn’t specified, but you’ll still have the ability to adjust this when you actually go to print.
You can also select the default data fields you want to include on the label. And the data field options will differ between Barcode Labels and Shelf Labels. For clarification on what each of the data fields means, just hover over the tool tip.
Printing Product Labels
Barcode and shelf labels can be generated and printed from several places in NikoHealth, including:
Inventory tab
Product Catalog
While receiving against a Purchase Orders
Printing from the Product Catalog
In the Product Catalog, after you select a product, or multiple products, an action bar will appear at the bottom of the screen where you can choose to print the barcode label or shelf label for the items you’ve selected.
If you’re printing the Barcode label, you’ll see those default fields we just set up have been applied. You can make changes to the format or number of labels to print, if you need to. Otherwise, you’re good to print.
If you’re printing the Shelf Label, you do have to select a Service Location because the Retail Price shown on the label is based on that service location.
Printing from the Inventory Tab
You can also print product labels from your Inventory Tab. Select the items you need, the action bar will pop up on the bottom of your screen, and choose the type of label you need to print.
Because you’re looking at specific inventory, you can choose to print the number of labels based on number of items physically in stock. Or, you can choose to print a specific number of labels per product.
And these same options apply to both Barcode Labels and Shelf Labels that you’re printing from within the Inventory tab.
If you’re printing the Shelf Label, you do have to select a Service Location because the Retail Price shown on the label is based on that service location.
Printing from a Purchase Order
As you receive inventory against a Purchase Order, you can print product labels right from the same screen. Navigate to the Purchase Order, use the blue NikoHealth action button to receive the order, and at the bottom of the screen, there are buttons for printing both Barcode labels and Shelf labels.
You can choose to print based on the number of items you received if you need a label for each one. Or, you can choose to print a specific number of labels for each product. And these same options apply to both Barcode Labels and Shelf Labels that you’re printing while receiving items against a Purchase Order.
If you’re printing the Shelf Label, you do have to select a Service Location because the Retail Price shown on the label is based on that service location.
